The Supplication of the Major Chain Armour

A comprehensive divine supplication containing 1,000 names of Allah (SWT)

Introduction to Duaa Jawshan Kabeer

Duaa Jawshan Kabeer (The Supplication of the Major Chain Armour) is one of the most significant supplications in Islamic tradition. It is a comprehensive prayer that contains 1,000 names and attributes of Allah (SWT), including what is believed to be His Greatest Name (Ism-e-A'dham).

This magnificent supplication serves as a spiritual armor for believers, protecting them from worldly hardships and the fire of Hell in the Hereafter. The word "Jawshan" in Arabic means "armor" or "chain mail," signifying the protective nature of this powerful prayer.

Duaa Jawshan Kabeer is highly revered, particularly among Shia Muslims who recite it during the holy month of Ramadan, especially on the Nights of Destiny (Laylatul Qadr). However, its profound spiritual benefits make it valuable for recitation throughout the year.

Quick Facts

  • Contains 1,000 names of Allah (SWT)
  • Comprises 100 sections with 10 names each
  • Each section ends with a repeated refrain
  • Revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
  • Highly recommended for Laylatul Qadr nights
  • Contains the Greatest Name of Allah (Ism-e-A'dham)

Origin and History

According to narrations, this supplication was taught by the Angel Jibrael (Gabriel) to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) during one of the battles. The Prophet was wearing a heavy coat of armor that was causing him discomfort. At this moment, Angel Jibrael descended with a divine message:

"O Muhammad! Your Lord conveys his salutations to you and has said to take this coat of armor (Jawshan) and to recite it as this is a protection for you and your Ummah."

This supplication was then transmitted through the chain of Ahlul Bayt (the Prophet's household). Imam Ali ibn al-Husayn Sayyid as-Sajjadin (peace be upon him) related from his father from his grandfather, the Prophet of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family).

It has been mentioned in the books "Balad al-Amin" and the "Misbah" of Kafa'mi that Imam Ali ibn al-Husayn Zainul Abideen narrated:

"My father Amir al-Mominin Ali ibn Abi Talib had bequeathed to me that I should memorize and protect this supplication and write it on the Kafan (burial shroud) and that I should teach it to my family members and he highly encouraged me to read this supplication as it contains 1,000 names of Allah and within these names is the Greatest Name of Allah (Ism-e-A'dham)."

The supplication has been transmitted through prominent Shiite scholars, such as 'Allama Majlisi (1037-1110 AH) in his "Bihar al-Anwar" and has become an integral part of Islamic spiritual practice, particularly within Shia tradition.
